Since 1958 Massey Ferguson tractors have been globally recognized name in the farming industry. Massey Ferguson was originally known as Massey Harris Ferguson after the merger of the Massey Harris and Harry Ferguson companies in 1953. Five years after the two companies merged the name Harris was dropped, and the company became Massey Ferguson.
These two independent companies were both successful in their own part of the globe. Harry Ferguson Agricultural was a UK based firm, while Massey Harris was based in Canada. After the two companies merged Massey Ferguson Became a well known brand of farming machinery around the world. By 1958 they had a work force of over 23000 and European sales were up by 200 percent.
The early 1960s Saw the acquisition of an Italy based tractor firm, as Massey Ferguson were rapidly expanding through Europe. The newly built factories in Europe gave the company a firm foothold on the European market. The high spirits of the company were dampened in 1960 by the death of Harry Ferguson at the age of 85.
Through the 1960s and in to the 1970s Massey Ferguson continued to expand globally with sales record regularly being broken. New manufacturing plants were opened in Poland and other parts of Europe. New models were being introduced to many countries around the world, including Asia, the Middle East and South America. Now with over 67000 workers world wide and production at its highest, with more than 20000 machines being imported to Japan, Massey Ferguson was the World leader in farming machinery.
The boom of the 1970s took a downturn in the early eighties, as demand for agricultural machinery dropped. At this time the firm had direct market coverage in 180 countries and fought the downturn by continuing to introduce new models and types of farming machinery.
Following the drop in sales through the 1980s, Massey Ferguson made a huge impact on the world agricultural market, with the introduction of more new model and innovative machines. These new machines were fitted with micro computers making their production on farmland much more efficient and cost effective. This decade also saw the introduction of the new ride on lawn mowers.
Throughout the 1990s Massey Ferguson often had cause to celebrate. The company celebrated 150 years since Daniel Massey first opened his workshop in Canada, where he produced basic farming equipment. In 1994 a US based corporation bought Massey Ferguson and relocated their headquarters to North America.
The turn of this century saw a steady but continuous growth for the world wide firm. Technology now allows for farm machinery to have small computers built in to them, which are able to communicate with computers in farm offices. Massey Ferguson are constantly looking for and introducing new technologies integrated into their tractor, combines and other farming machinery. The growth of Massey Ferguson tractors looks set to continue around the globe. As farmers face new challenges this ever expanding company will provide farmers with new ways to help farmers meet these challenges head on.
