We have all though about having a swimming pool at one time or another. If you are ready to get one built or have one you have thought about converting from a chlorine system to a salt water system you need to become familiar with some of the differences before making a choice.
Any swimming pool that uses a chlorine or salt water system needs balanced pH water levels to maintain a sanitized water environment. Chlorine pool systems may need a bit more frequent testing to check pH and alkaline levels but this type of scheduled testing is required for all pools to keep the water balanced. A number of contributing factors can cause problems with keeping water levels balanced. Extreme heat or cold, rain, the use of plastic thermal covers and excessive bathers all can affect pH and alkaline levels.
It can be confusing when trying to determine whether there are economic advantages to using a salt pool system. The items that will cost more for a chlorine system are not limited to the initial system installation. Over time chlorine could build-up and cause deterioration to pool liners, pumps, and bleach pave stones. Chlorine systems are less expensive to initially install, but continued operational costs over time will surpass that of a salt water pool.
In addition to the cost for supplies, a chlorine system involves the use of chlorine which must be transported and stored so that the toxic fumes are contained. Chlorine will also cause premature fading and deterioration of swimsuits, cover-ups and towels, not to mention the harsh effects that it may have on swimmers\’ eyes and skin.
Salt system pool water is usually explained to feel like it has been softened, has a smoother, better feel and is not harsh on skin and clothing. Properly leveling the salt in a salt water pool system will make the water taste no different than household tap water because only 10 percent of the salt found in ocean water is used in a salt water pool system.
